In this first episode I begin my journey through Post Crisis Superman with the issue that kicked off the whole thing: Man of Steel #1 by John Byrne, Dick Giordano, John Costanza, and Thomas J. Ziuko. This issue was published by DC Comics in July, 1986. I read this when it originally came out and just read it again before I listen to your podcast. Both times I had the same reaction. The art is really clean and Byrne kept the story simple and went back to basics. I thought it was great! The best change he made was keeping Clark’s parents alive.
The first time I read it I’m not sure if I remembered seeing the figure watching Pa and Clark when they’re looking at the rocket but I know that is answered later on. And I think the scrapbook that Ma Kent is keeping gets used in a story later with Batman.
Looking forward to hearing what you have to say about the issue.

I’m really enjoying your podcast! I’ve had an ongoing project over the last few years of reading every Marvel comic of the 1960’s as they were released every month. (Thank you Mikes Amazing World!) As if I needed another project on that level, I’ve started a DC reading project doing the same thing, starting with Action Comics #1. I’m only reading core characters though ( Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash etc.) so it’s moving along pretty quick. Your podcast is a great companion piece as I make my way through Golden Age Superman.
I’m looking forward to following along with Post Crisis Superman, but never really reading anything about the Pre or post crisis events, can I jump right in without knowing about those thing?
Thank you again for the entertaining show!

I'm in December 1967 with my Marvel super hero readthru. I've been working through Supes and the Bat having already read Dr Fate and Green Arrow. I'm thinking maybe Wonder Woman is next.

I’m in June 1968 in my Marvel readthrough, and October 1942 in my DC reading project. Can’t wait to get into the 1970’s Marvel. As far as the DC comics… man some of those Golden Age stories are tough to get through. 11 pages seem so long at times lol. Best part of those stories are the characters ending every other statement with “eh”. Example: “ oh, a snooping reporter eh?” Ha ha. So funny how tough guys talked in the 40’s.
