This week our strip opens on the New York Docks with a meeting between the recently arrived Freidrich Hold and dr Engel. Friedrich has journey to visit with his niece, left in the care of Engel. Engel has spoken of scientific discoveries that Friedrich is anxious to learn about. Those experiments seem two fold. One he has given an orangutan the mental capacity of human beings and regressed Friedrich's niece to that of an ape. Disturbed Friedrich runs from Engels house and Encounters the Spirit when he arrives back at his hotel room. Frienrich fills in The Spirit on what he knows. As the Spirit leaves to hunt down Engel the now animalistic niece of Friedrich's enters his hotel room and kills Friedrich. The Spirit returns to discover the dead Frienrich. Putting together the manner of his death The Spirit burns the room to shift evidence when the police arrive. Back at Dr Engel's mansion his orangutan creation has deduced the matter of his origin and is not happy. Engel uses the ape like niece to stall his orangutan man while he makes a getaway. The niece quickly dies. Using his enhanced senses the orangutan man pursues Engel to a final confrontation on the docks. Engel is killed and the orangutan man commits suicide. The Spirit arrives too late.

First off, man there was a lot of death in this one.
I'm curious what the experiment The Spirit wanted Dr Friedrich's input on. That's why The Spirit was waiting for Friedrich in his hotel room.
Interesting that Engel experimented in both directions of the evolutionary scale at the same time.
I wonder if one of both Dr's were German? If so it would explain perhaps why both had to die. This was written in 1940 after all.
I liked the fact that there didn't seem to be as many scene shifts and that we spent more time (panels) with each story beat.
