This time the strip starts off with a somber scene as John Marston is told by a doctor that if the conditions his wife lives in don't change soon Johnny's wife will die. A dryer climate is what she needs but the couple do not have the money to make the move.
Mrs Marston gives Johnny a nest egg she has been saving up, twenty eight dollars and forty one cents.
Jonny recalls that his dad had a gambling addiction and that he lost most if not all his money at Tony's Gambling Den. Johnny returns to Tony's to try to increase his wife's nest egg.
Johnny manages to increase his stake to one thousand dollars but also gains the attention of Tony himself. Challenging Johnny to one last game, Johnny refuses and is escorted out on Tony's place minus his cash.
After a severe beating Tony tells his stooge Monk to get rid on Johnny and Monk drops the kid off in Wildwood Cemetery assuming he's going to die.
The Spirit watches and then takes Johnny back to his hideout and nurses him back to health.
The Spirit takes it upon himself to avenge Johnny's wrong. First he attempts to get the Police Commissioner to do something but when that fails The Spirit sets out across town hitting up every gambling den and leaves each only after massive winnings.
The last place The Spirit stops at is Tony's, who's ready and waiting for The Spirit to show up.
When The Spirit catches Tony cheating Tony's boys attack and the Spirit is forced to leave in a hail of bullets.
A car chase ensues at which point The Spirit jumps out of his car causing a crash that alerts the police. Tony is taken into custody for the murder of John Marston. By faking Marston's death the police get Tony and Monk to turn on each other and incriminates both in all of their dirty dealings. After they both sign confession Marston hops up and with the winnings from The Spirit he and his wife move to warmer climes.
The strip ends with The Spirit receiving a thank you note from Johnny that brings a tear to The Spirits eye.
