Our second strip starts a little more dynamically than the first with a taxi cab driving through the Wildwood Cemetary. The location of the Spirit's hideout.
Yes a bit of characterization that is not becoming lets move along. Unfortunately it occurs first only two panels in.
In the third panel we see The Spirit who rather athletically joins the couple in the back of the taxi as fare and is allowed to stay due to the pistol he holds to the back of the cabby's head.
Eventually The Spirit orders the taxi to stop at the edge of town and leaves allowing the young couple to continue their journey to police headquarters.
Once there we find out of the couple the young lady is police commissioner Dolan's daughter, Ellen, and the young man her fiance Homer. She has come to see her father to ask if she can visit the mental ward as preparation for her upcoming collegiate psychology exam. I took Psych 101 in college and a mental ward visit was not a thing we did.
During the tour, Ellen encounters Dr Cobra who asks that she help him escape as he is but a scientist whom is constantly interrupted by the authorities.
In six quick, same page panels Ellen and Homer help Dr Cobra escape, to be picked up together by a couple of Dr Cobra's stooges waiting outside with a car. The group then retires to one of Dr Cobra's hideouts where he reexerts his control over his gang with a show of physical strength that belies his small stature.
The Spirit shows up at the Commissioner's office, Mealy in tow. Mealy gives up the location of Dr Cobra and the Commissioner charges to the location, police units in tow to hopefully rescue his daughter and soon to be son-in-law. Meanwhile donning a disguise The Spirit attempts to find out where Dr Cobra is hold up.
Selecting an appropriate looking gentleman the Spirit slips him one of his tombstone calling cards and then sits back and follows the dude straight to Dr Cobra.
After The Spirit arrives at Dr Cobra's hideout a fight ensues during which we see The Spirit handle business but also watch as Dr Cobra among other things pistol whips Homer and delivers a left jab to Ellen's chin. He's bad, he's going down hard.
The running gunfight between Dr Cobra and The Spirit empties outdoors with Denny attempting to run down Dr Cobra, which he ultimately does only to find Dr Cobra is holding a grenade. The Spirit shoots Dr Cobra who pulls the pin on the grenade annd blows up.
The end scene involves The Spirit improving Helen as a gift to the couple and stealing a kiss as a reward for rescuing her. Not a good look.
