Here we go with my thoughts on Action Comics #1. First off, for a 13 page story, there is an awful lot going on. I mean, we get: - Superman's Origin
- Superman saving a woman on death row who was falsely accused
- Clark Kent getting the assignment to learn more about Superman
- Superman stopping a dude who was beating his wife
- Clark going on a date with Lois
- Superman saving Lois from a gangster whom Lois had slapped earlier when the gangster tried to get with her while she was on her date with Clark
- Clark getting a new assignment to cover the war in San Monte
- Clark instead going to DC where he uncovers a Senator on the take
- Superman confronting the dude that's paying off the Senator, then picking him up and jumping around DC with him, only to miss a building they were leaping onto, ending the issue on a cliff hanger
Did I miss anything? I'm telling ya, this sucker was PACKED. Plus, the first time I read this, I was shocked to learn the differences in the original origin, compared to what we know now. I mean, it's common knowledge at this point that Superman (Kal-El) was put on to a rocket as an infant by his birth parents to escape the destruction of Krypton and how the rocket crashed in rural Kansas and was discovered by Johnathan and Martha Kent who take him in and raise him as their own son, Clark Kent. His powers derive from the Earth's yellow sun (Krypton's was red) and as an adult he moves to Metropolis to become a reporter for the Daily Planet and adopts the Superman identity to save people and do good and such. In his first appearance here in Action Comics 1, all they had was that a planet was destroyed from old age (no name for the planet), that an unnamed scientist placed his infant son on a rocket, he's sent to Earth, he's discovered by a passing motorist and is turned over to an orphanage. He has his abilities only because, like his people from the unknown planet, his "physical structure was millions of years advanced" of those on Earth. And, he can't fly. No Kansas, no Kents, no flight. Oh, and the newspaper he works for is the Daily Star, not the Daily Planet. It will be interesting to discover when this stuff comes into play later on down the line.

It definitely felt like I was reading a script from an OTR radio show. Not sure if that's my own baggage or not.
You're right lotsa stuff going on and most of the strings are only connected by way of Superman/Kent being involved otherwise almost like a bunch of short vignettes or something of that sort.
This was the first time I had actually read this story and other than the cover I have only ever seen one or two panels that I remember from the story.
I definitely want to keep track and see when some of the original things you've mentioned get changed. We'll have to make note as we notice them.
Supermman seemed perhaps more violent and for sure more aggressive in his dealings with allies and bad guys. I notice in my Batman readinngs that this seems to be a common case with him as well. I guess a result of the times they were written in. His desire to talk to the Governor comes to mind.
I read from the Golden Age HC and I am not a fan of the refurb colors on the strip. I do like the hash marks on the blue of his suit to darken it though. It gives a feeling of maybe still tryig to keep everything on the dl to me rather than the I'm out and proud vibe Superman gives off today. Like maybe he doesn't want everyone to have a clear picture of him or something.
The linework gave me a much more dynamic feeling than a lot of contemporary art does. Superman didn't feel quite like he was posing as much. Lotsa of movement lines, speed lines, different camera angles. Not as much focus on a panel being a finished piece of artwork that the artist is going to sell the original of later on.
Back in the day if I was a kid it would have made me want more that's for sure, can't really say the same thing after the Batman's first appearance.
Overall I dug it more than probably any other golden age story I have read so far. I'm curious to see hoow long that holds true.

I have to admit, reading this issue made me want to revisit an idea I had in which I would read all the Superman books, beginning with Action Comics #1, and do a podcast about it. With that popping back into my head, I put this together. Will I ever do it? I don't know. I really don't know. I go back and forth.
