Homer Creep surprises The Spirit while in his secret lair, demanding things at gunpoint. Previously, in the strip dated 6/9/1940...entitled The Return of Dr Cobra The Spirit Homer and Homer's fiance Ellen met for the first time. Through the inadvertent ministrations of The Spirit Ellen now finds that Homer may not be the kind of man she wants to marry. Homer wants to even things up by killing The Spirit. Rather The Spirit comes up with a plan that will in the eyes of Ellen diminish the image of The Spirit in her eyes and elevate that of Homer. The Spirit kidnaps Ellen with the thought that Homer rescuing her will accomplish the above. Unfortunately the theater from which Ellen is kidnapped is run by a group of mobsters that want to use the presence of Ellen for their own benefit and pursue The Spirit to get Ellen back. A running chase ensues heading to the endeavor point between Homer and The Spirit. Fisticuffs, flying cars, bullets, smoke screens all occur until finally The Spirit has put down all of the theater thugs. Homer arrives and lays low The Spirit only to find that Ellen is disappointed that her kidnapper did not win and puts Homer on notice that she hates him and never wants to see him again.

I guess The Spirit's secret lair is not so secret. Not only that be he shows Homer more of it as they discuss what's going on. This is the first call back strip to a previous installment, one almost two moths ago. I dig continuity. Ellen O'Neal changing her name to Daisy Kay is kinda weak sauce. The Spirit's setup to taking Ellen hostage was pretty cool. I'd like to see that in a movie visual...animation and live action. Those three panels all had a very cinematic feel to them. We have a flying car sighting. Not sure why The Spirit led the theater thugs to the exact same place that he was planning to meet up with Homer. Ellen really has it bad for The Spirit, despite the fact that he kidnapped her and lead into into the midst of a running gun fight she still pined over him when Homer attempted to rescue her.
