The opening panel of this strip takes up about seventy fiver percent of the page, the largest panel yet. Lots of Eisner eye candy, never a bad thing. The final two panels on the opening page set the location with a city panel and then the inside of an apartment located from the larger city panel. Very cinematic. I'm not sure Thayer is quite the bad guy we are supposed to believe. It's his money and should he not be able to spend it the way he sees fit? For all we know the niece is a person that most would find evil and just because she is ill does not change that fact. We really don't know. I guess the fact that The Spirit wants to help her means she's a good person? I'm not sure that's enough for me but I guess for the story that's where we have to go. Thayer has a steel yambag to kill himself the way he does. Not quick, not clean. Leaving him alive enough that when the police arrive, how ever long that took, he is still alive enough to claim The Spirit did it. Dolan doesn't want to believe Denny is capable of murder but after several attempts to find out otherwise, he's left with no choice but to do his job. Kinda funny that The Spirit just makes a normal visit to his friend Commissioner Dolan and just digs his 'grave' deeper. Almost a full page of panels showing The Spirit in motion to the hospital to help Thayer's niece. Pretty. Not sure it's really cool to make the hospital staff perform the procedure under the duress of gunpoint but hey I guess it worked. Another full page of panels showing The Spirit attempting to evade the police after leaving the hospital. More pretty. Once he was captured you knew it was only a matter of time but I think The Spirit's method of escape is pretty specious. It works but how much disbelief should I suspend? Now he's a true outlaw. Seven strips in I wonder now how long this will last? Let's see.
