The Spirit visits Commissioner Dolan's office because he was invited via a public notice to be there as Mr Midnight murders a man and has Dolan and Spirit as witnesses.
Mr Midnite arrives a few minutes before midnight and with flourish introduces himself. Mr Wright arrives on time, signs a confession as to his nefarious doing against Mr Midnight and promptly dies at midnight.
Mr Midnight leaves short there after having exchanged some witty repartee with Spirt before exiting.
Mr Midnight, escorted by his man Beppo retires to his ancient mansion only to find The Spirit waiting for him.
Exchanging repartee once again The Spirit and Mr Midnight enjoying a relaxing game of chess until Beppo attacks Spirit from behind upsetting the chessboard. Pressing the attack Mr Midnight strikes Spirit sending him careening down a long stone staircase.
Believing him defeated Mr Midnight instructs Bepppo to set fire to the mansion and leave The Spirit where he lay.
As they are leaving a fire weakened section of the roof collapses, killing Beppo and hides the fact that The Spirit is conscious and pursuing the duo now single villain.
Securing a rope made of curtains, The Spirit leaps from an upper story in hopes of flying toward Mr Midnight and capturing him. Both men now aflame crash through a window and land in the moat surrounding the mansion.
Securing Mr Midnight The Spirit travels via flying car back to police headquarters. During the final interrogation The Spirit recounts how Mr Midnigt had used poison tipped finger nails to kill Mr Wright and ultimately dies by same.
