Right off the bat we see that Dennny Colt is a clean cut, suit/fedora wearing 1940's house dick. Next up is Commissioner Dolan, to me pretty typical type for the time. Finally the name drop of a pretty bad dude named Dr Cobra.
Denny indicates he knows the whereabouts of, the recently escaped from the pokey, Dr Cobra and Dolan encourages Denny to bring in the good Dr by shoving Denny out the door. Denny's only requirement is that he get the reward for said capture.
Denny heads through 'crooked narrow alleys that thread like grey veins' until he finally drops down through a manhole in the gutter to at last find Dr Cobra giving the menacing order to get more chlorine to a flunky. Quite the purple prose to describe Denny's journey. I hesitate posting large swaths or even the entire comic but you gotta read Eisner's descriptors here.
When we finally see Dr Cobra's face and he looks to me more like a swarmy businessman than an evil scientist.
Focusing on Dr Cobra, Denny is attacked by a henchman, whom he bests, only to be doused in evil scientist vat juiced released by an errant gunshot smashing a nearby vat.
Denny is left for dead, found by the authorities and apppropriatley buried in a suburban cemetary.
The following night we watch as a figure emerges from a grave and are lead to believe that same figure has a meeting with Commissioner Dolan making a point to obscure their features during the meeting.
Dropping the name, The Spirit, this person disappears out the windoow with the mission of bringing in Dr Cobra. Dolan grabs a cab to head to the cemetary on a mission of his own (note cabby).
Next we see a couple thugs at the Wildwood Graveyard suburban cemetary bearing the calling card of 'The Spirit', a small tombstone. The meeting is to determine the whereabouts of Dr Cobra.
The Spirit releases the two Dr Cobra thugs after a little intimidation. The goal is to follow the rats to their lair but beforehand he is confronted by Commissionar Dolan who has been hiding in the wings the entire time. A quick explanation from Colt/The Spirit and we cut to Dr Cobra's men returning to the nest.
Dr Cobra, hiding beneath the local quays, puts two and two together after the report from his men and realises that his liquid worked on Denny Colt.
The Spirit avoids an ambush and smokes out Dr Cobra who, in the final confrontation, is shot by Commissioner Dolan.
